House committee to begin hearings on auto insurance bills

The Michigan House is wasting no time to consider Senate-approved changes to the state’s auto insurance law.

The Republican-led House Insurance Committee will hold a hearing Tuesday morning on the fast-moving legislation. No vote is expected until later in the week at the earliest, and the panel is likely to make changes to the bills.

Backers say the GOP-backed measures would curtail costs without capping benefits in the only state to require unlimited medical benefits for those severely injured crashes. Opponents say drivers wouldn’t be guaranteed lower premiums and patients could receive less care in their homes.

Car insurers complain that they pay have to more than health insurers do for medical care, resulting in higher premiums for motorists. Auto insurance legislation has stalled previously over objections from health providers.
